FRESH plans to build a luxury five bedroom home in a leafy Weymouth street have been given a nod of approval from the town council.

Planning permission to build a new home in the garden of an empty property in Belle Vue Road was approved in February 2019, however the design of the building has since changed.

Members of Weymouth Town Council's Planning and Licensing Committee considered the new application at an online meeting.

Cllr Lucy Hamilton said: "The present application has a similar footprint (to the previously approved design) but I would observe that the design is very different.

"In the previous decision there was a reference to tree survey comments with an option to preserve the green outlook at the front of the property.

" I'm concerned it doesn't really complement or enhance the conservation area."

Cllr Graham Winter said: "These properties have massive, massive gardens - I feel that with this particular house, the plot is big enough to accommodate the plans.

"I've got no objection apart from being concerned about the trees - I don't dislike the design. In an area like this where there's plenty of room, something that's a bit individual is acceptable in my view."

Cllr Jon Orrell said: "It's a big plot - There's quite a hotch-potch of houses in that road already. Although it's a modern building it's not unpleasant to look at - some modern houses can look brutal and industrial and I don't think this really does.

"I'm minded to approve of it with a caveat to protect the trees and shrubbery."

Cllr Trefor Morgan said: "I feel that the design complements the type of housing that is already there, although it is squeezed into a narrow site.

"I think there could be a lot worse."

Cllr David Northam added: "I think it looks squeezed into the plot, but that's for the planning officer to decide. I have no objections."

The committee members agreed they had no objection to the plans, subject to the tree officer's recommendations being met.

The plans will now go before Dorset Council's Planning Committee for consideration.
