DISGUSTED volunteers have hit out at daytrippers who left poo inside yoghurt pots, takeaway containers and even a sock.

The revolting mess at Lake Pier in Poole was discovered by environmental campaigners GoPladdle as they embarked on a clean-up operation after last weekend's hot weather.

They also cleared away dirty nappies, underwear, faeces and sanitary products after people ignored advice to stay away from busy beaches.

Toilets in the area were closed but that did not stop visitors pouring into the area and leaving their mess behind them.

The group is run by Jake Sculthorpe and Rosie Bailey who were shocked at what they discovered.

Jake, from Upton, said: "While we can commend the great effort some people went to disguising their faeces inside takeaway containers, yoghurt pots, towels, blankets, socks and crisp packets, we did not enjoy clearing it up.

"Lake Pier was in a sorry state to say the least. All the expletives in the world cannot explain how bitterly disappointed we are with the human race right now."

He described the clean-up operation as "stomach-churning" and said they also found bags full of cigarette ends, piles of food packaging, soiled wet wipes and broken glass.

Jake and Rosie have run the group for nearly two years and initially focused on plastic pollution.

But the lockdown has left them having to clear up after irresponsible visitors.

"I have never seen Lake Pier as busy as it was last weekend and people were down there for long periods of time" said Jake.

"There were beer bottle lids across the beach and discarded barbecues. We were left speechless at the total disregard some people have.

"This is a public area and I can't believe people would leave it in this state."

Jake and Rosie, who works as a nurse, live in Upton.
