A CAR rolled towards a cliff edge after its handbrake failed while the owner was on the beach.

The vehicle was brought to a standstill after hitting another vehicle which was attempting to park at Eype Beach car park.

West Bay Coastguards, who were on patrol in the area, helped with the situation and managed to trace the owner of the unattended car.

A spokesman for West Bay Coastguard said: "During a visit to Eype Car Park, the handbrake on an unattended vehicle failed, resulting in it rolling backwards and colliding with another vehicle which was in the process of parking.

"Luckily, there were no injuries involved and the officers assisted the cars occupants.

"Due to the angle of the car park, both vehicles were left in their position as moving either would have resulted in the unattended vehicle rolling towards the cliff edge.

"The West Bay officers took the vehicles details and notified the Police to try and trace the owner, as well as walking the beach to see if the owner could be found.

"Luckily, the owner of the vehicle was indeed on the beach and returned to the car park to re-position their car, and swap insurance details with the other parties.

"The officers updated the police and then left to continue their patrol.

"Although sea swimming, surfing and other sea-based watersports are now permitted, please remember that there is currently no lifeguard cover on any local beaches, and please follow all the recommended safety advice before entering the water.

"If you do find yourself in difficulty or see something that gives you cause for concern, do not hesitate.

"DIAL 999 and ask for the COASTGUARD."
