TRAVELLERS who set up camp on a sports field at the end of last week have now left.

The group of several people had parked up their caravans and vehicles at the home of Taunton Town Football Club on Friday morning.

They moved off The Peacocks' Cygnet Health Care Stadium, in Wordsworth Drive, yesterday evening (Sunday).

The club has issued the following statement: "You may be aware from other media sources that a group of travellers arrived at the Cygnet Health Care Stadium on Friday morning and parked up their caravans and vehicles on the pitch.

"As a result an eviction notice was served on the travellers yesterday morning (Saturday) which required them to leave the club premises by 10am Monday morning and we are now pleased to report that earlier this evening (Sunday) they left the stadium.

"We would like to sincerely thank Devon Investigations for their assistance with this matter and also thank our neighbours in Holway, Halcon and Blackbrook for their kind support."

Club chief executive and chairman Kevin Sturmey met with the travellers after they drove onto the pitch on Friday.

Mr Sturmey worked with them and helped them in the hope they would respond to his diplomacy by leaving promptly.

He described them as "respectful" despite a few initial "threats from a few of them".
