CAMBORNE 17pts

CONEY HILL 33pts

CAMBORNE can take heart from this Intermediate Cup defeat against mid table opponents from the league above, writes Paul Bawden.

The Cherry and Whites forwards were more than a match for the visiting pack, but on this occasion unlike previous South West Two match ups they arrived with their full strength threequater line that delivered all five tries.

"Town" unfortunately spilled the ball in midfield in the opening exchanges and from halfway Coney Hill moved the ball left for dangerous winger Nev Codlin to scorch over.

Camborne then kept the visitors at bay for a long period with their backrow of Dave Roberts and young flankers Dave Eustace and Sam Bartle prominent.

The scores were levelled in the 27th minute when an unstoppable rolling maul travelled fully 20 metres for hooker Andrew Smith to claim a try in the top corner.

Crucially the visitors then hit back with two converted tries before half time, both courtesy of well-rehearsed midfield moves.

Trailing 5-19 at the break, Camborne launched the expected comeback straight from the restart. The arrears were soon reduced when skipper Roberts emerged with a try from a close range lineout catch and drive after David Mankee had punted a penalty to the corner.

Minutes ticked by without Camborne mounting any serious pressure and outstanding winger Codlin then stretched the lead, completing his hat trick of tries and improved upon by fly half Rory Baker on the hour mark.

Almost immediately the Cherry & Whites replied to keep in touch courtesy of a determined individual try by full back Joe Parma converted from the touchline by scrum half Mankee.

With all to play for at 17-26 it was the visitors that sealed victory in the 67th minute with another try from a sweeping handling moved converted by Baker.
