Access to Porthleven Beach has been closed off today by coastguards.

Tape has been put across the entrance to the slipway leading down to the beach, to prevent people from making their way onto the sand.

A combination of strong winds, a high spring tide and a large Atlantic swell mean that conditions could be too dangerous for the public to be on there.

Low tide was at 12.25pm today, meaning that the next high tide will be at 18.05pm.

Coastguard Rescue Teams across Cornwall will be carrying out patrols this bank holiday weekend.

A Maritime and Coastguard Agency spokesperson said: "The aim of these patrols is to increase our readiness to respond to incidents as and when they arise, and to identify members of the public putting themselves in to danger and to issue safety advice, in the absence of lifeguard cover due to Covid-19 restrictions."

As part of this patrolling, coastguard teams will also be working closely with Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service this weekend.

Teams from Falmouth, Penzance, St Austell and Bude will work alongside fire and rescue water safety teams in their home locations.

The spokesperson added: "This collaborative working will highlight the dangers of the coastal areas and provide safety advice to the public looking to use the coast, beaches and sea this weekend.

"This weekend could be challenging with the lifting of restrictions and beautiful Cornish sunshine, high spring tides and a large Atlantic swell.”
