TWO people were treated for smoke inhalation after a bonfire got out of hand in a village near Bridgwater last night.

Firefighters from Bridgwater were called out to a home in Woolavington at 8.15pm yesterday evening (Friday, May 15), after fire spread from a bonfire in the back garden to a conservatory.

The crews swiftly got to work to douse the flames using hose reel jets, breathing apparatus and a thermal imaging camera.

The conservatory suffered significant fire damage and there was some smoke damage to the rest of the property.

Two men were treated on the scene by ambulance crews for smoke inhalation.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue confirmed that the cause of the fire was believed to have been accidental.

The fire service is urging people not to have bonfires during the coronavirus lockdown, asking residents to compost garden waste rather than burning it.

The fire service has seen an increase in the number of call outs to bonfires that have got out of hand in recent weeks.
