A brighter lamb and firmer hogg trades. Cows still selling well and wanted.

(48) UTM & (-) OTM Prime Cattle. Auctioneer’s comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a slightly increased entry of 48 prime cattle met a similar trade.

Smart suckler bred Limousin heifers from J & DJ Cotterill, Monksilver, at 184, 183.5 and 178ppk, when a same bred steer from the same farm met a call of 177.5ppk. Good Charolais heifer at 179.5ppk from CJM Shackleton, Wiveliscombe. Further good Blue heifer at 177.5ppk from SJB Adams & Son, Rhode.

Further steers saw a shapely Blue from MJ Tuckett & Partners, Ide also rise to 177.5ppk. Shapely black Limousin at 175.5ppk from JR Westcott & Son, Willand. Suckler bred Limousin steer at 179.5ppk from CJM Shackleton again.

Steers sold to £1,144.12 for a Charolais (679kg) from L & A Maddock & Co, Wiveliscombe. Charolais steer at £1,139.06 from MJ Tuckett & Partners. Angus at £1,096.52 and £1,089.39 from GG Dyer, Whitestaunton.

Heifers peaked at £1,138.34 for a Charolais from G Sloman, Creech St Michael, who sold another at £1,122.21. Blue heifer at £1,114.70 from SJB Adams & Son, Rhode.

32 Barren Cows and Cull Stock Bulls. Auctioneer’s comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report another short entry of 32 cull cows met a very similar trade. The cull trade has not been so affected as the clean, as mince is in demand and cows are still wanted.

Top was 127ppk for a smart Angus from PMA & SM Parrett, Bristol, who sold other good Angus cows at 122.5 and 120.5ppk. Further meat Angus at 114.5ppk from B Jeffery, Oakford and 112.5ppk from AC House & Son, Thornfalcon. Clean type Charolais at 121.5ppk from HR & BM White & Son, Watchet; heavy Blue at 117.5ppk, J & D Tillbee, Wedmore and a meat Blonde at 114.5ppk from RM Prouse, Exeter.

Sucklers sold to £982.22 for a tremendous South Devon from PJL Rose, Taunton. 816kg Angus at £934.32 from B Jeffery.

A better show of dairy breeds forward, when more meat was on offer, which peaked at 123.5ppk for a huge Holstein (800kg) from R Lucas & Son, Isle Abbots, who sold a well fleshed Brown Swiss at 122.5, 110.5 and 108.5ppk and further Holsteins at 116.5, 113.5, 109.5 and 107.5ppk. Further better type Holsteins at 109.5 (2x) and 104.5ppk from J & D Tillbee, Wedmore and 109.5ppk from CG, GR & MS Spiller, Upottery.

Dairy breeds sold to the day’s top of £988.00 for 800kg Holstein from R Lucas & Son, who sold a Brown Swiss at £973.88 and further Holsteins at £890.98 and £878.41. Massive 896kg Holstein at £891.12 from CG, GR & MS Spiller.

1520 Finished Lambs and Hoggs. Auctioneer’s comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report double the entry of lambs forward at 653 head sold to a much stronger trade particularly for the lighter lambs. The best sold to 285ppk from DA Kidner & Son. Others 282ppk from JH Waterman & Son and A Churches; 281ppk from AE & WF Chinnock; 276 and 275ppk from WT Hodges; 275ppk from JE & LP Reason and R Baker and 274ppk from HR & BM White & Sons, D Day, J Hillman and TE Harris.

Top prices per head were £117 from R & F Barrow & Son. Others £116 from DR Howe & Son and GJ Cottrell; £115.50 from JH Waterman & Sons, A Churches, R Baker, WT Hodges; JE & LP Reason, GR Baker & Son and L Joyner and £115 from HR & BM White & Sons, J Hillman, SJ & RWJ Rawson and PJ Down. Overall average £108.68.

867 hoggs sold to a slightly firmer trade for all presented. The best handyweights sold to 233ppk from RB Cox. Others 215ppk from DA & AP Gillbard; 207ppk from JR & LM Hutchings, RJ Langford and C Radley; 204ppk from RJ & LA Mitchell & Voke and AA, L & R Johnson and 203ppk from KJ Seymour.

Heavier hoggs remain a more difficult trade and sold to £100 and £98.50 from RJ & LA Mitchell & Voke. Others £98 from RJ, HA & MR Popham; £97 from TH Dyer; £95.50 from RB Cox and £95 from RR Creed & son and SER Hunt. Overall average £90.58.
