The Devon Federation of Young Farmers County Show and Sale is a well anticipated event in the YFC calendar.

Devon YFC is extremely fortunate to have the support of Kivells at Exeter Livestock Centre who host the event each year.

This year was set to be the fourth annual show and sale with a record number of clubs signed up to show their stock whether that be dairy, beef, sheep or pigs. 14 clubs from across the County had planned to have their own classes with additional open classes available to allow members from smaller clubs to get involved and show stock for the very first time.

The event always has a fantastic buzz with local farmers, trade stands and sponsors all in attendance to show their support to members and witness who is crowned champion of each class. The event is always a superb showcase with members spending many months preparing their stock in anticipation of being named champion.

As a result of the current situation, an alternative was needed to ensure the hard work of all Devon’s members did not go without recognition. Subsequently, the Virtual Livestock Show was planned. This provides members with the opportunity to submit photographs of their stock to be judged by the team at Kivells.

Helen Bellew, agri chairman at Devon YFC said: “It’s so important to run competitions like this during this time to keep some sense of normality for our members, it’s a very strange time and a difficult time for many people isolated at home.

"We are hoping that our virtual show will give members a focus and help to keep the YFC spirit alive! Prior to Covid-19, a lot of work had gone into picking the right animals, feeding and halter training, therefore we are delighted to be able to give members the opportunity to showcase their efforts.”

It is anticipated that there will be a record number of entries from members throughout the whole of Devon, to include members that may have never entered in previous years.

The livestock will not be sold following the show, however this new event will be a fantastic alternative to crown the best in show. Members that are awarded Champion of their class will then go head to head to be crowned the Supreme Champion, a well renowned award which every member entering aspires to achieve.

All entries are to be submitted by April 22, with the entries and results being posted on Devon YFC social media pages throughout the day on the April 29.
