With the coronavirus pandemic impacting third-sector organisations across the country, a Cornish charity that has been forced to temporarily close its shops and postpone its fundraising events has come up with a novel idea to help raise funds while the public are in 'lockdown'.

"We’re setting people a very unique challenge while they’re in isolation and spending time at home," said Oli Hoare, head of fundraising at Cornwall Hospice Care.

"As everyone is unable to make it to the hairdresser or barber, we're encouraging you to have a go at cutting your own hair, or to ask someone in your household do it for you!

"Whether you're trying something completely new or just going for a tame trim, take on our Spend On Care Not Hair challenge! You can also take part if you’re choosing not to touch your hair, beard or moustache for the whole lock down period."

Cornwall Hospice Care, a charity that provides care for terminally ill patients and their families from Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell and St Julia's Hospice in Hayle, is then asking those who take part to donate what they would normally spend on a regular haircut, to help support their vital work during such challenging times or to ask others to sponsor them.

"It's a very difficult period for charities across the country and for those on the frontline of our communities. With the closure of our shops and postponement of our various fundraising events, we're adapting and finding new ways to support our key workers who are continuing our crucial work," said Oli.

"We think this is a really fun way of encouraging support when we're all in lockdown and struggling with our hair. The time is now to experiment with your locks and it's all for a good cause!”

Cornwall Hospice Care's #SpendOnCareNotHair campaign launches today (Monday) on its Facebook page, asking everyone to share their photos of their new fringes, perms, Mohawks, bobs or any style they choose.

"Do your bit, stay at home, take on the challenge and donate the money you would have spent on your hair during quarantine to Cornwall Hospice Care instead,” said Oli. “Every penny makes a difference so please give what you can to those living with terminal illnesses at this testing time. Your donations will allow us to continue providing 24-hour support for those in need.

"Let’s face it, we’re all finding new ways to fill the time at home, so let’s all take on a lockdown haircut! Not only will there be many laughs shared, you’ll be helping us to raise money for those who are most vulnerable. Thank you!”
