TWO ponies had to be freed from a water filled ditch near the outskirts of Bridgwater at the weekend.

Fire crews were called to the scene near Parchey Bridge, on Ward Lane, Chedzoy, at around 6.11pm on Saturday (March 15).

A Special Rescue Team from Bridgwater, along with a fire engine from Bridgwater and an Animal Rescue Tactical Advisor were quickly mobilised.

"Upon arrival, crews confirmed two ponies stuck in the ditch," said a spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service.

"One pony measuring at 13 hands high and the other measuring at 15 hands high.

"Crews got to work using animal rescue equipment and one ladder and were successfully able to rescue both ponies from the ditch."

The ponies were left in the hands of the owner who was advised to contact a vet due to one of the ponies being in foal.
