A lighter entry of prime cattle met a similar trade to recent weeks with butchers-type cattle leading the way but insufficient numbers for buyer’s requirements.

Top price per kilo was 215p for a Limousin x heifer from Messrs. R.G. & E.J. Williams of St. Martin, whose other heavier 654kg Limousin x stood next in line at 211p making a top value of £1,380, both heifers purchased by R.J. Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

Leading steer was a 622kg Limousin x from Mr. J. Julian of Summercourt selling at 210p/kg and £1,306 to David Wilton of Peter Morris Butchers of St. Columb.

The best number of store cattle for the year and good quality cattle forward met a strong trade and plenty of demand around the ring.

Strong South Devon steers making the money with 22 over £1,000 including for Mr. T.G. Hawke whose best 22 month old trio reached £1,200 with further bunches to £1,150, £1,140 and £1,100 plus half a dozen from Mr. J.R. Stephens of St. Winnow, Lostwithiel at £1,060.

Three Limousin x steers reached £1,015 for Messrs. J. & J. Sawle & Son of Beacon.

A strong run of steers all 19-21 months old for Messrs. W.I. Higman & Son of Roche saw British Blue crosses hit a top of £960.

Smart Limousin crosses around 14 months old for Messrs. A.D. & J.A. Bray of St. Martin saw top trio of steers to £885 who also had same age Simmental x heifers to £760 for four.

British Blue x yearlings to £830 for Sixty Acres Ltd of Zelah.

A super entry of 15 suckler-bred 10 month old Limousin crosses for Mr. G.W. Boundy of St. Columb saw top four steers reach £840 with same age heifers to £775 for four, and £750.

Several pens of couples which included two pens of Hampshire Down crosses with strong lambs at foot from Mr. S. Wilkinson of Higher Tregajorran, Redruth with singles topping at a whopping £190 (£95/life) and doubles to £180 (£60/life).

This week saw a special consignment of 100 scanned in-lamb Suffolk and Texel x ewes from Messrs. P.W.J. & D.E.J. Vian of Gorran, St. Austell, all scanned doubles and due from 24th March.

The more Texel-type younger ewes saw 2Ts selling at £153, 4Ts to £152 and two pens of big Suffolk x Mule full mouths achieved £143.
