Lodge & Thomas report an entry of 20 UTM and OTM prime cattle, 32 cull cows and bulls, 142 store cattle including 44 suckler cows and calves and breeding bulls, 34 rearing calves and 403 finished and store sheep.

A tighter entry of prime cattle met a continued strong trade with butchers’ type cattle selling especially well.
Greater numbers required to satisfy buyer orders.
Top price per kilo was 213p for Limousin x heifers from two vendors – a 591kg heifer making £1,259 for George Richards Farms of Summercourt and a 571kg Limousin x for Mr. D. Jenkin of Manaccan, both being bought by Chris Dale of Dales Family Butchers of Helston.
A Limousin x steer for Mr. Jenkin stood next in line and topped the steer section selling at 207p/kg to R.J. Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.

Improved top prices and averages but greater numbers required for a strong contingent of buyers.
This week saw Friesians up to 145p/kg for Messrs. C.J. & J.E. Colwell of Grampound purchased by David King of Exeter and a 813kg heifer at 140p/kg for Messrs. A.D. & J.A. Bray of St. Martin realising £1,138 to Roger Eddy of Tehidy.
Beef types saw a South Devon cow for Messrs. P.R. & T. Eustice of Crantock selling at 136p/kg to David Ellis of Lelant with another South Devon to 134p/kg for Laity Farms of Kea and bought by Dawn West Devon of Hatherleigh.
Also knocked down at 134p/kg was a big 838kg Simmental x cow for Mr. A.E. Lawrence of Mullion realising the top value of £1,123 to David Ellis.
A big 1317kg South Devon bull from Mr. G. Griffin of St. Dominick sold on for further breeding at 108p/kg making £1,422!

Good store cattle numbers this week which included a dispersal sale of South Devon cows and calves on behalf of a local farmer.
Prices achieved across the board were excellent.
An entry of steers around 17 months old for Mr. L.J. Mann of Constantine saw a top of £1,000 for a Parthenaise x Blonde d’Aquitaine with a further trio at £940.
This week saw several entries of super young Limousin cattle including half a dozen 10 month old Limousin x steers from Mr. A.M.C. Eddy of St. Erth all realising £810 and a further five from a run for Messrs. A.R. & B. & A. Hosking of St. Martin to £795.
Heifers topped at £860 for a trio of Limousin crosses for Mr. A.J.H. Lawry of Kenwyn.

Special sale of South Devon cattle
Lodge & Thomas were favoured with the dispersal sale of 43 South Devon cows and calves and in-calf cows on behalf of Mr. H.J. May of Trispen, Truro.
A full sale ring of potential buyers watched the proceedings.
Top cow and calf realised £1,400 for a younger cow with heifer calf at foot.
Other notable prices for cows and calves were £1,190 and £1,090 for older cows with steer calves and £1,070 for an older cow with young heifer calf.
Cows and calves averaged £1,050.
A run of in-calf cows sold to top prices of £1,150 and £1,130 and averaged £875.
The farm’s South Devon 7 year old stock bull realised £1,020 and a further South Devon bull for Mr. P.A. Sims of St. Wenn of the same age realised £1,150.
There was plenty of demand around the ring for these suckler outfits and greater numbers could easily have been sold.

A light entry of calves this week but plenty of demand which meant the trade and prices were very good.
