A farm shop in North Petherton may close following a planning application writes Steven Salter.

Carrott's Farm Shop, located off of Bridgwater Road, has been selling fresh fruit and vegetables from the site for 36 years.

But this week a planning application has been submitted for 39 new homes to go where the current farm shop is located and the surrounding land.

Owner of Carrott's Farm Shop, Tony Carrott said he had been planning for retirement, and while the shop would eventually close, it would remain open for the time being.

Mr Carrott said: "I am the last in the line and I can't go on forever.

"I am planning for retirement and for the future.

"The farm shop has been on the site for 36 years.

"It will be closing eventually but I don't know when, possibly not for a year or two - it depends on the planning."

The application submitted to Sedgemoor District Council is for 39 new homes, 13 of which would be designated as affordable housing.

The proposed layout of the development comprises a mix of linked terraces, semi-detached and detached properties, consisting of two, three and four-bedroom houses.

In total the site covers 1.68 hectares, and the application includes plans for access from Bridgwater Road, public open space, a play area and attenuation pond.

To view the full application, visit the planning section of the Sedgemoor District Council website, and search for application number 37/20/00010.
