Pedigree calved heifers from DW & CE Jones of Monmouth topped at £2000, when others sold to £1950 from JG Morgan, £1940 for the first consignment of a phased dispersal from Leggat & Son, Kent. £1910 and £1820 for SFB Agricultural Services.

A smaller entry of cows sold to £1740 (2nd calver) from Deptford Farms; £1720 from J Leggat & Son and £1690 from Alston Sutton Farms.

A second consignment of incalf heifers from MR & J Cheney of Hampshire sold to £1440 (2x) and £1420 (4x). Bulling heifers sold to £760 from E Hudson Baker, Suffolk.

A much larger entry of 2697 store lambs sold to another very strong trade, particularly for the best lambs, although the smaller types were perhaps a shade easier. Once again the strongest lambs were in excess of £100, to a top of £111 for an outstanding pen from E Bright. A small entry of 31 breeding ewes sold to a reasonable trade. Ewes scanned inlamb due April sold to £107 and £102 from P Langdown, who sold others at £99. Overall average £96.

Couples (90 Ewes & 134 Lambs)

A much larger entry of couples, being 90 ewes with 134 lambs at foot, which sold to a noticeably reduced trade. Top call of £200 (£66.67/life) was achieved twice by SJ Cheacker for his doubles. Other best doubles to £195 (£65/life) from Wallover Barton Farm; £180 (£60/life) from MJ Keate and £178 (£59.33/life) from L Habberfield & Son. Singles to £152 (£76/life) from Jones & Pether and £140 (£70/life) from L Habberfield & Son and Wallover Barton Farm. A good bunch of 9 ewes with 15 lambs from J Harding sold well at £188 (£70.50/life). Overall average £59.42/life.

Goats (50)

A mixed entry of 50 goats sold to £108 for a strong billy from RG & AJ Habberfield, when others sold to £97.50, £85 (2x) and £80 from the same Vendors. Others to £78 from IP Merry. Overall average £59.15.

Orphan Lambs (42)

More orphans forward met another bumper trade when a larger entry averaged £20. Top price of £35 with lots of interest for higher quality. More again next week.

850 Poultry. Auctioneer's comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a slightly smaller entry of 850 head typical for our January sale, which met a relatively strong trade and saw a top of £100 for two silver laced Wyandotte females on behalf of N Croton. Further gold laced Wyandottes, which met a flying trade on the day, sold for £75 from R Sweet, Bishops Lydeard. A rare pair of Silver Carolina wildfowl forward from SJ Harper peaked at £75. A smart pair of golden pheasants sold at £55. Other prices of note included white Call Ducks which sold at £55.
