Greenslade Taylor Hunt report an increased entry of 111 prime cattle met another good trade, when best butchers heifers were particularly dear.

Top was 213.5ppk for a superb black suckler bred Limousin heifer from MJ Chilcott, Catcott, who sold other best butchers’ heifers at 203.5ppk (2x Limousin cross Devon) and 188ppk (black Limousin). Further very smart suckler bred Limousin heifers at 195 and 183ppk (both black) from JF Walker & Partners, North Petherton and 190.5 (brown) and 184.5ppk (red) from J & S Vinnicombe & Son, Ottery St Mary.

Very clean (no waste) suckler bred Charolais from L & A Maddock & Co, Wiveliscombe at 187 and 185.5ppk. Barley heifers at 186.5ppk (Limousin) and Blues at 182, 179.5, 179 and 178.5ppk from SER Hunt, Kilve. Gold Charolais heifers from HWC & JM Butler, Flax Bourton at 185.5, 177.5 and 174ppk. Best dairy bred Limousin heifer at 185ppk from W Johnson & Son, Dalwood.

Steers peaked at 202ppk for a black suckler bred Limousin from RW Darby, Middlezoy, who sold another at 196 and a red at 179.5ppk. Really well finished suckler bred Limousins at 192 and 189ppk from J & S Vinnicombe again. Absolute best dairy bred Limousin steer at 187ppk from W Johnson & Son again. Smart gold Charolais steers at 185.5, 175.5, 175 and 174ppk from HWC & JM Butler again. Pure red Limousin steers at 185 and 178ppk from ML & EE Edwards, Wick St Lawrence.

Native steers peaked at 182.5ppk for an Angus from RA Reed, Seaton, who sold others at 180.5, 180 and 179.5ppk and a Hereford at 179.5ppk. JPT Reed & Son, Southleigh, sold Angus at 181.5 and 180ppk and a Hereford steer at 177.5ppk.

Steers sold to above the £1300 mark again to £1,374.97 for a Limousin from RW Darby, Bridgwater. Well fleshed Blue at £1,317.44 from JM Cload & Partners, Westport. Many better steers £1250 plus.

Heifers rose to a tremendous £1,252.35 for a 690kg Blue from JM Cload & Partners, who sold another at £1,219.43. 674kg Charolais at £1,250.27 from HWC & JM Butler. Many better 538 to 656kg heifers £1150 plus.

A price of note on the day was 158.5, 661kg and £1,047.69 for a Friesian steer from HJ & HB Case Ltd, East Huntspill.

61 Barren cows and cull stock bulls. Auctioneer's comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a short entry of cull cattle, when an abundance of buyers were in attendance, met a flier to start 2020.

Top was 139.5ppk for a Devon from Poad & Slee, Exford. Further pure bred Devons at 125.5, 122.5, 121.5, 120.5, 119.5 (2x) and 118.5ppk from J & P Prideaux, Timberscombe. Further natives at 126.5 and 119.5ppk (2x) for pure Angus from Sheldon & House, Kingston St Mary and 124.5ppk from AJ Hunt, Yatton and 122.5ppk from Hanchard Farming Partnership, Draycott, both for Herefords.

Continental cows peaked at 137.5ppk for a Blue from JC & JCM Carroll, Street. Pure Salers at 128.5ppk twice from RM & BM Boundy, Winkleigh. Charolais at 124.5ppk from GR Gould, Exeter. Limousin at 123.5ppk from S & P Boyer, Bridgwater.

Sucklers sold to £1,089.38 for a Charolais from GR Gould. Native cows to £1,033.90 for a Hereford from Hanchard Farming Partnership.

Dairy bred cows also much dearer to 127.5ppk for a younger Friesian from JH & SA Denbee, Wedmore. Best meat Holsteins 120.5ppk, CJ & JA Reed, Bridgwater; 119.5ppk, New Farm Bowdens Ltd, Langport; 119.5ppk again, PD & JL Biss, Kingweston; 118.5ppk (Friesian) FG, C & E Tucker, Mudgley; 114.5ppk, RJ Tucker & Sons, Othery and 113.5ppk (Friesian) Crocker Farms Ltd. Better steakers around 110ppk. Plain steakers 100ppk. Only very plain below.

Dairy breeds sold to £1,026.66 for a 852kg Holstein from CJ & JA Reed.

1002 Finished lambs. Auctioneer's comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a larger entry of 1002 hogs sold to a very strong trade for the handyweights but slightly easier for the heavier types. The best sold to 214ppk and 209ppk from SG Harraway. Others 213ppk from Rushmore Estate; 211ppk from R & G Matravers; 209 and 208ppk from DGB & CN Tratt; 209ppk from LJ Vowles; 208ppk from D Coles and 207ppk from AL Butcher & Sons, Arscott Partners, T Eames and M Heal.

Heavier hogs sold to £104.50 (2x) and £100 (2x) from MJ Patch. Others £104 from RJ & HA Pearse; £103 from RE Webber; £100 and £99 (2x) from J Sprake & Partners; £100 from PJ Holloway and N Woollacott; £98.50 and £98 from Wallmead Farms Partners and £98 from TC & SCI Pain and GE & DM Powell.
