A light entry of prime cattle which is not unusual at this time of year. Trade continued firm for mainly commercial type cattle and limited butchers’ types forward. Top price per kilo was 193p for a Limousin x heifer from Mr. R.E. Richards of St. Keverne purchased by J.V. Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station. Top value came for another Limousin x heifer weighing 721kg for Messrs. A.J. & S.T. Richards of St. Keverne and realising £1,298 to David Ellis of Lelant.

Another good entry of cull cows met a similar trade to recent weeks with well-covered cows selling to best demand. Leading this week were a pair of British Blue x cows for Messrs. R.J. & E.J. Hemmings of Lanlivery selling at 133p/kg and 123p/kg to David Ellis of Lelant. Dairy types saw Friesians to 106p/kg for Messrs. K. & M. Ferris of Gunwalloe matched by a Norwegian Red x from Messrs. W.L. Jasper & Son of Pendeen, both bought by Dawn West Devon of Hatherleigh. Standing top at £915 was big 924kg Friesian from Messrs. B.L. Hearn & Partners of Whitecross going to David Ellis.

STORE CATTLE

Auctioneer – Patrick Dennis

A large number of store cattle for the run up to Christmas with mainly younger stock forward. Trade remained firm throughout with plenty of demand around the ring. An entry of super South Devon steers around 20 months old for Mr. C. Eustice of Cubert saw top trio at £940. Three strong Charolais steers around 16 months old for Mr. R.J. Geach of Padstow realised £930 with his three heifers slightly younger at £760. A striking pair of Limousin x steers at just 11 month old from Messrs. H. Gwennap & Son of Leedstown sold away to £900. A bunch of five young South Devon steer calves from Heather Rogers of Carbis Bay, which included three end of April born, realised £700. Heifers topped at £850 for a 19 month old Hereford x pair from Mr. A. Perry of Tregony. A nice run of 11 suckler-bred Aberdeen Angus named-sire 9/10 month old heifers from Messrs. B.J. Tregoning & Son of Wendron sold to £575.

A good entry of calves for the run-up to Christmas with a strong trade and plenty of demand throughout. An older British Blue x heifer calf from Messrs. B.L. Hearn & Partners of Whitecross topped the day at £295 with a further pair of older Blue heifers at £250 for Messrs. R.J, K.M. & A.M. Worden of Gunwalloe, Helston. A November-born British Blue cross also led the bull prices for Messrs. L.T. Harvey & Sons of Newbridge at £250.

Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station. Topping at £96.50 were whopping 66.6kg Zwartbles lambs from Mr. B. Tomkins of Wendron bought by J.V. Richards Ltd. This was closely followed by a smart pen of 46.6kg Beltex x lambs from Mr. R.A. Coad of Cubert selling at £95.50 (205p/kg) to R.J. Trevarthen Ltd of Roskrow.
