A farmer who gave away all his pigs apart from one sow now has a new litter of 13 - after the female jumped a 4ft fence to get pregnant before they all left, writes John Bett.

Dina the pig was once part of a large group of swine but several months ago all the other pigs were sent away from Hillside Farm.

That left her as the only pig on the entire island of Bryher, in the Isles of Scilly, and owner Graham Eggins said he was content to look after just one of the animals.

But one morning when he went to check on Dina he was left bewildered after he found her alongside 13 suckling piglets.

South West Farmer:

His only explanation for the seemingly immaculate conception was just before the other pigs left the farm, Dina had escaped and jumped into a field with the resident boar called TJ.

Graham said: "I think Dina wanted to know what the fuss about TJ the boar was before we sent him away.

"She somehow jumped over a 3.5ft fence, past four fields, and then over another fence.

"She had had three litters before but never with TJ."

Graham said that he decided to stop farming saddleback pigs because it didn't work out financially, but kept Dina because "she was our first pig and we always had a bond".

Just days before the other pigs were due to be moved, he was surprised to find Dina in a pen with TJ - the only boar they kept.

Graham added: "Roll on three months, three weeks and three days and we end up with this lot - our largest ever litter of piglets.

"It's not what we had planned. It's a bit like her last holiday romance on her own love island."
