Second season sale of suckled calves.

Stags, auctioneers at Tavistock Livestock Centre, report an 'in and out' trade for their second sale of suckled calves, which included the prizes for top prices sold.

A decent entry of just under 300 cattle was very variable, with the best cattle easier to sell than the smaller cattle showing the weather.

Winning the top price suckled calf cup was Mr R Cole, Bere Alston, who had a 6mo Charolias x steer at £650. The top price heifer cup went to Messrs J & G Nankivell, Tavistock for their 3-7mo Charolais x that realised £570. The top price purchased suckled calf went to Messr F G & D M Penwill, Mary Tavy for their 3 7mo Simmental steers that realised £640.

A great deal of thanks go to the sponsers on the day who were Mole Valley Farmers, Tamar Milling, Barkers Animal Health, Roger Cole Farm & Shearing Supplies, Crediton Milling Company, Bridgmans, and Michael Pidsley & Son Ltd.

There were a number of cattle in the 9-12mo bracket which sold to £760 for a 12mo Charolias x steer from Mr R Cole Bere Alston. A cracking bunch of 6 11mo Charolais x /Blonde x steers from Messrs Skelly, Wotter; £670 for 3 12mo Hereford x steers from Mr K J Watson, Postbridge; £650 for 3 12mo South Devon steers from Mr G Watson, Postbridge; £625 for 2 11mo Charolais x steers from Mr G H J Medland, Tavistock; £610 for a 14mo Charolais x heifer from Mr R Cole, Bere Alston;and £610 for 2 18mo Simmental x heifers from Messrs F G & D M Penwill, Mary Tavy.

Other notable suckled calf prices included £605 for 5 7mo South Devon steers from Mr G Goddard, Sampford Spiney; £580 for 5 7mo Saler x steers from Mr D J Skelley, Ivybridge; £400 for 6 5-6mo Charolais x heifers from Taviton Farms Ltd, Tavistock; £485 for 8 4mo Charolais x steers from Messrs T Cole & K Yeo, Altarnun; and £500 for 2 5mo Aberdeen Angus x steers from Mr R J Glanville, Milton Abbot.
