The market report from Sedgemoor Auction Centre for Monday, November 11, is as follows. The total stock was 623 head.

Improved lamb trade up £8 per head on the week, which topped at 198ppk and £105.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a short entry of 76 prime cattle met a brighter trade again. More could have been sold to advantage.

Top was 193.5ppk for a good type, clean red Limousin heifer from BA Richards, Williton, who also sold Charolais heifers at 185.0, 179 and 175ppk. Shapely Limousin heifer at 189.5ppk from RC Rowe & Son, Upottery, who sold another at 174.5ppk. Very good, black dairy bred Limousin heifers at 186ppk twice from W Johnson & Son, Dalwood. Shapely and well fleshed Blue heifer at 180.5ppk from SJB Adam & Son, Rhode, who sold another at 172ppk. Good type Limousin and Charolais heifers at 178 and 175.5ppk from MP & DM Hine, Northay.

Steers rose to 188ppk for a better type red Limousin from ML & EE Edwards, Weston Super Mare, who sold a black at 177, a red at 176.5, a Limousin cross Devon at 176 and more red Limousins at 175 and 172.5ppk. Very good black dairy bred Limousin steer at 182ppk from W Johnson & Son again.

Native steers to 170.5ppk for a lean Angus from Holway Farms Ltd, Cattistock, who sold another at 164.5ppk.

Steers sold to £1,243.06 for the dairy bred Limousin (683kg) from W Johnson & Son. Limousin steers at £1222, £1,174.73, £1,135.20, £1,129.60, £1106 and £1,100.94. Blue steer at £1,184.69 (701kg) from SJ & RW Staples, Bridport. Native steers at £1,067.64 and £1,066.02 for Herefords from WH Elford & Son, Wareham.

Heifers sold to the day’s top of £1,266.87 for a Limousin (726kg) from RC Rowe & Son, who sold another at £1,143.45. Dairy bred Limousins at £1,218.30 and £1,097.40 from W Johnson & Son. Blue heifers at £1,157.56 and £1,102.86 from SJB Adams & Son. Limousin at £1,126.83 from RW Fry, Long Sutton. Limousin and Charolais at £1,122.30 and £1,119.25 respectively from BA Richards. Native heifers to £1,109.82 for a South Devon from P & S Watts & Partners, Wells.

36 Barren cows and cull stock bulls. Auctioneers comments:

Top was 126.5ppk for a smart Limousin cow from PA Strawbridge, Honiton. Good Simmental cow at 122.5ppk from PFJ Saunders, Hemyock. Native sucklers to 119.5ppk for a pure Hereford from IJ Jennings & Son, Ilminster. Angus to 114.5ppk for a lean type from W Read Partnership, Taunton.

Sucklers sold to £1,081.58 for the Limousin from PA Strawbridge. £1,014.30 for the Simmental from PFJ Saunders. Hereford from IJ Jennings & Son at £979.90.

Dairy breeds rose to 115.5ppk for a steaking Swedish Red from PJLS Farms Ltd, Ashcott, who sold another Swedish Red at 113.5ppk and a Montbeliarde at 109.5ppk. Empty steaking cows generally 105ppk plus.

Dairy breeds sold to £879.29 for the Montbeliarde from PJLS Farms Ltd, whose Swedish Reds returned at £851.25 and £808.50. Holstein at £807.30 from J & D Tilbee, Wedmore.

511 Finished lambs. Auctioneers comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a very small entry of 511 lambs sold to a flying trade for all presented. The best sold to 198ppk from GB & AE Pearce. Others 197 and 190ppk from SF & KL Evans; 193, 191 and 190ppk from Spring Farm Partners; 192ppk from GI Ware; 191ppk from DA & AP Gillbard and 190ppk from Maddock & Son and RD Willcox.

Heavier lambs also met a much dearer trade and sold to £105 from HJ & HB Case Ltd. Others £100 and £98 from CHJ Atwell & Sons; £96 from Spring Farm Partners; £95.50 from Milborne Wick Farms Ltd; £95 from FG, NK & AJ Gammon Ltd and £93.50 from Loosemore & Son. Overall average £85.03.
