The market report from Sedgemoor Auction Centre for Monday, November 4, is as follows. The total stock was 822 head.

All types of stock met a firmer trade.

62 Prime and untested forward cattle.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a short entry of 62 prime cattle met a brighter trade. Numbers and Christmas demand livening the ring up.

Top was 202.5ppk twice for very smart red Limousin steer and heifer, from SER Hunt, Kilve, who also sold a well fleshed Blue heifer at 178ppk. Very shapely black Blue steer at 192ppk from R & G Speed, Axminster. Good run of continental steers at 184.5 (Bazadaise) 179 and 177.5 (Charolais) and 178ppk (Limousin) all from HWC & JM Butler, Bristol. Shapely lean, white Charolais at 174.5ppk from G Vining, Axbridge.

Native steers rose to 174.5ppk for an Angus from RA Reed, Seaton, who sold another at 169.5ppk and Herefords at 169.5 and 169ppk. Further Hereford at 171.5ppk from RP Tucker & Son, Middlezoy.

Further heifers at 177ppk from both AAB Rowe & Son, Chilton Trinity (Simmental) and W Johnson & Son, Axminster (Limousin) who sold another at 175.5ppk. Leaner pure white Charolais at 176ppk from G Vining again.

Native heifers peaked at 172.5ppk for a Shorthorn from AAB Rowe & Son again.

Steers sold to an excellent £1,269.62 for a tremendous South Devon (796kg) from P & S Watts & Partners, Wells. Top drawer Limousin at £1,267.65 from SER Hunt. Heavyweight Charolais at £1,264.12 (748kg) and £1,238.95 (710kg) from G Vining.

Good type continentals at £1,238.88 (Limousin) £1,237.18 and £1,227.94 (Charolais) from HWC & JM Butler. Native steers to £1,161.06 for a Hereford from RP Tucker & Son, Middlezoy.

Heifers sold to an outstanding £1,263.60 for an exceptional red Limousin from SER Hunt. Dairy bred and well fed Limousins at £1,187.67 (671kg) and £1,093.37 (623kg) from W Johnson & Son. Shorthorn and Simmental heifers at £1,166.10 and £1,118.64 respectively from AAB Rowe & Son. Strong Charolais (667kg) at £1,130.57 from HWC & JM Butler. Heavyweight Simmental (716kg) at £1,120.54 from GW & GM Long & Son, Chardstock.

88 Barren cows and cull stock bulls. Auctioneer's comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report an increased entry of 88 cull cattle, when several were of generally improved flesh, met a brighter trade. All buyers keen to secure cattle. Steakers in particular 9ppk up on the week.

Top was 125.5ppk for an Angus cow from A & V Strawbridge, Lyme Regis, who sold further Angus at 116.5 and 115.5ppk. Further Angus at 115.5ppk again twice from both M Squire, Bridgwater and RP Adams, Cheddar. Well fleshed Devon at 112.5ppk, RP Adams again. Hereford at 111.5ppk, R Wall, Highbridge. Few continental cows forward saw a smart Blue at 124.5ppk from KN Groves, Sutton Mallet and a well covered Charolais at 118.5ppk from RC Rowe & Son, Upottery.

Sucklers sold to £972.51 for grand 842kg Angus from RP Adams. Hereford at £952.65 from R & G Baker. Blue at £908.85, KN Groves. Charolais £884.01 RC Rowe & Son.

Dairy breeds peaked at 119.5ppk for a really well fleshed Holstein from AJ & WL Turner, Chard, who sold further better type Holsteins at 113.5 and 109.5ppk twice. More good meat Holsteins at 118.5ppk, RG Greenway & Son, Bathealton; 115.5ppk, IJ & SA Bell & Son, Bridgwater; 114.5 and 109.5ppk, TR Quick, Highbridge; 113.5ppk, CJ & JA Reed, Bridgwater and 111.5ppk for a Fleckvieh from RF & BA Larcombe, Axminster.

Dairy breeds sold to £960.21 for a Holstein (846kg) from CJ & JA Reed. Further heavy Holsteins at £920.75 (777kg) RG Greenway & Son, £911.04 (832kg) £877.36 (773kg) £846.06 (708kg) and £828.24 (816kg) AJ & WL Turner Ltd; £890.34 (852kg) and £817.65 (790kg) RW, JA & AW Barton, Cullompton; £874.34 (757kg) and £873.43 (805kg) IJ & SA Bell and £848.63 (775kg) TR Quick.

657 Finished lambs. Auctioneer's comments:

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report another small entry of 657 lambs as the continuing wet weather has made finishing lambs very difficult. The handyweight lambs met a much improved trade with the best to 188 and 179ppk from R Sherry. Others 184 and 181ppk from CJ Sage; 184ppk from TP & JA Cole; 182ppk from SRA Ham; 180ppk from M Peaster; 180 and 179ppk from KA Foxford and 179ppk from JE & LP Reasons (2x) EB & JA Webber and B Davis.

Heavier lambs met a similar firm trade to a top of £90 from W Johnson & Son (2x) and Milborne Wick Farms Ltd; £89.50 (2x) from J Sprake & Partners Ltd; £87 from JB Pearce; £85 from CHJ Atwell & Sons and £84 from T Wollacott, HM Thomas & Son and MEJ Branfield & Sons. Overall average £76.68.

15 Cull ewes and rams. Auctioneer's comments:
