The market report from Sedgemoor Auction Centre for Saturday, November 2, is as follows. The total stock was 5324 head.

A shortage of store cattle drove the top prices to £1,255 for steers and £1,140 for heifers. 2244 store lambs met a firming trade to £77.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a lot fewer cattle forward and the trade reflected the quality of entry, which was not up to last week’s standard. Top price was £1850 for a pedigree home bred heifer from M & K Churchill & Son. Other heifers to £1800 and £1740 from Deptford Farm; £1780 from AP Ractliffe and JH & SA Denbee. Second quality heifers much dearer. Fewer cows on offer to £1640 and £1320 from RL & ME Trott. Simmental cross heifer £1100 from BG & M Hutchings. Bulling heifers to £680 x3 from GMD & D Clothier. Calves to £190 x4 from Deptford Farm.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a shorter entry of 536 stores, on the World Cup final day, being part of 863 with the stirks and sucklers, which met a slightly improved trade. A lot of “washed out” cattle on offer but those that had been fed encouraged buyers on and the top end was dearer.

Top was an impressive £1255 for a well fleshed Charolais (27m & FA) from ME Sampson & Son, Upottery. Further Charolais £975 for next Spring’s turnout types (7x 16/20m & FA) from Ham Farm Partners, Taunton and £975 again (19m & FA) WD Burrough & Son, Membury. Herefords to £1320 for A Wiggins. Best cows and calves to £1180 for a Blonde cow with Charolais cross heifer calf from CFJ & PJ Street. A good run of pedigree Ruby Reds saw a 2013 born cow with 6m steer calf to £1000. Others from L Chapple to £920. Incalf cows to £760 and incalf heifers to £700 from the same Vendor. Devon cross Aberdeen Angus cross cows with Angus steer calves (x2) to £1000 and £980 from Dorset Wildlife Trust. British Blue cows and calves to £910, £880 and £850 from RW Jenkins. Top price of £935 (16m) for a Limousin steer from RJ Gooding, who sold other Limousins to £765 (10m) and £740 (10m). Further Limousins to £810 (2x 12m) CJ & J Lang; £710 (13m) AJ Barrett, when younger steers sold to £605 (7m) £570 (7m) and £540 (2x only 6m). Cull Ewes & Rams (894)

A smaller entry of 894 cull ewes and rams, which was generally lacking quality, sold to a similarly firm trade. The best continental ewes sold to £124 from DJ Barker. Other ewes to £110, £96 and £87.50 from RC Burrough & Sons; £97, £90 and £82 from JM Cracknell; £88 from RH Dymond & Son; £82 from LM & V Haskell and £79 from D Tippetts. Cull rams sold to £123, £103.50, £100 and £97 from J Keedwell, when others sold to £92 from A Wales and £90 from C Smith. Medium ewes £45-£65, plain £20-£45 and boners generally £15 plus. Overall average £52.43.

Breeding Ewes (762)

A large catalogued entry of 762 breeding ewes sold to a firmer trade for all presented. Charollais cross Texel shearlings from DJ Barker topped the section at £150. Suffolk Mule shearlings to £125 from A Taylor. Others of the same breed to £124 (3x) from Swangrove Farms. Exmoor Mule shearlings to £120 from Williams & Heywood. Best of the North Country Mules made £121 again from Swangrove Farms. Older ewes sold to £108 from J & J Down. Overall average £88.86.

Stock Rams (88)

A good number forward for the time of year sold to a firm trade. Plenty of buyers showing keen demand. Top price went to DJ Barker who sold an outstanding Charollais ram lamb to £335. R Holland also had a cracking run of Suffolks, when a 2T achieved £320 and another sold to £315. Other Charollais 2T’s, which came from Truro, achieved £220 twice. Overall clearance rate was 94%.
