It was a hard night for Somerset's Rosie Brandreth-Poynter who said she was 'gutted' after she was booted off and narrowly missed out on a spot in The Great British Bake Off final.

The semi final saw the remaining four contestants challenged by patisserie week and after a trio of tricky challenges it was Alice Fevronia, Steph Blackwell and David Atherton were given tickets to the final.

Alice was named Star Baker for the second time, and Sandi had the very difficult job of sending Rosie home.

At the end of the episode, Rosie said: "I am gutted, but I just have to be happy with everything that I have done so far."

Judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith gave the bakers a challenge with their patisserie choices.

For the signature challenge the contestants were asked to make eight elegantly decorated domed tartlets, encased in a sweet pastry.

For the first challenge Rosie baked Lemon, Raspberry and Mint domed tartlets filled with yuzu jelly and a raspberry, gin and mint creme patisserie.

The vibrant yellow tartlets won praise from the judges but Rosie's bake was criticised by Paul Hollywood who said it was a 'shame' her creme patissiere was too soft.

He said: "The creme patisserie needs cooking just a little bit more, it is a little bit soft. It is a shame about the creme pat."

In the technical challenge the bakers were challenged to make a Gâteau St Honoré, a french dessert comprising off two layers of puff pastry topped with profiteroles filled with creme chiboust and topped with caramel and chantilly creme.

Rosie's Gâteau St Honoré was judged to be the best in the tent, with the judges saying they had no complaints other than her profiteroles were upside down.

Heading into the showstopper challenge Rosie was in a good position but she struggled to pull off her sugar glass cabinet and cake.

Rosie's bake was themed around spending time with family and she created a range of patisserie goods including a chocolate tartlet and a brioche tarte tropezienne.

But the judges said some of Rosie's bakes were 'boring' and 'lacked in flavour' and her presentation was a 'bit simplistic.'

After deliberating judges Paul Hollywood and Prue Leith voted to send Rosie home.

After the show aired The Great British Bake Off tweeted a letter from Rosie in which she said she had 'the best time baking in the tent with the best people' and thanked the crew for being 'incredible' at managing her nut allergy.

The letter said: "What a crazy, fun, wonderful summer. I had the best time baking in the tent with the best people- and still don't believe it really happened.

"Thank you to the other 12 bakers - you are all so talented and friendly and made the experience what it was."

Fans of The Great British Bake Off took to Twitter to vent their frustration after Rosie's exit.

@Doktor Watson tweeted and said Rosie was 'robbed' of a spot in the final.

The tweet said: "She won the technical against all odds and made some actual patisserie in patisserie week!

"David made a wonky root-veg slab-cabin inside some kind of Scientology chapel."W

@shelf-obsessed tweeted: "Ludicrously and very Britishly annoyed about Alice beating Rosie to the final of #gbbo and getting Star Baker.

She came actual last in the technical. And Rosie came first! Does that mean nothing anymore? *shakes fist and curses*
