Truro Livestock Market Report for Wednesday, October 16

The entry, including Tuesday’s Orange Market, was of 54 UTM & OTM prime cattle, 60 cull cows and bulls, 346 store cattle including 235 suckled calves, 89 rearing calves & stirks and 424 finished & store sheep.

A fair entry of prime cattle this week met a trade with a bit more bite especially for butchers type quality cattle.

Top price of the day was 200p/kg for a British Blue x steer from Messrs W.H. & L.M Williams & Son of Allet purchased by David Wilton of Wilton Family Butchers, St Columb.

Top price at £1,256 was from the same farm for a Limousin x steer selling to Trevarthens of Roskrow.

Top price heifer was 194p/kg for a South Devon from Messrs P. & M.R. Biddick of St Columb purchased by Harvey Bros. Butchers of St Ives, Penzance and Newlyn.

Leading the OTMs at 139p/kg was a Blonde d’Aquitaine x heifer for Messrs A.P. & S.R. Hooper of Castle-an-Dinas, St Columb purchased by David King of Exeter.

A run of Aberdeen Angus heifers for Messrs K.L. & C.D. Rowe of Zelah sold to a top price of 128p/kg.

Cull cow numbers remain steady but averages are being affected by a high proportion of straight out of the parlour or plainer type cows both dairy and beef.

A heavy Limousin cow saw the top price at 130p/kg and value at £1,274 for Mr R.T. Dunn of Par purchased by Dawn West Devon of Hatherleigh.

A heavy Friesian for Messrs H.M., C.S. & M.A. Rowe of Ruan Minor sold to a top price and value for dairy cows at 95p/kg and £770 again purchased by Dawn West Devon.

The good conformation continental crosses were in demanded, with 10 pens selling over the £80 mark and to a top price of £84.50 for a smart pen of 48.7kg lambs from Messrs C.H.P. Powell & Sons of St Ervan, Wadebridge, bought by Trevarthens of Roskrow.

This was closely followed by well finished Texel x lambs from Mr. D.J. Tremain of St. Columb which sold for £84 to J.V. Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station.

Setting the premium to 181p/kg for the best pick of five pens forward from Methleigh Farm Ltd of Porthleven, purchased by J.V. Richards Ltd.
