The annual show and sale at Tavistock Livestock Centre on Saturday, October 19, received a decent entry of 128 Scotch Blackface Rams forward.

Trade was better than expected with 35 Rams selling in excess of the £300 mark and a very near 100 per cent clearance.

Top price and a West of England Scotch Blackfaced Sheep Breeders Association record was £924 (880gns) for a shearling from Messrs Abel Bros, Peter Tavy. Next best at £735 (700gns) were two shearlings firstly from Messrs G Abel & Sons, Peter Tavy (the first ram in the ring!) and secondly for Frenchbeer Farm Ltd, Chagford.

A shearling from Mr P R Coaker, Postbridge that had earlier won the Best Wool Sheep class made £651 (620gns). Other shearling rams in the money were £630 (600gns) for Messrs R A & C M Wonnacott, Chagford; £630 (600gns) for Mr A Mortimore, Chagford; £588 (560gns) for Messrs G H French & Son, South Brent; £567 (550gns) for both Mr A Mortimore and Frenchbeer Farm Ltd; and £525 (500gns) for Messrs J Savery & Son, Totnes.

The Judge Mr Crispin Alford placed the older ram from Mr A Mortimore, Chagford, as his Champion, which later went on to make £525 (500gns), which was top price older ram. There were only a few ram lambs forward, which topped at £189 (180gns) from Messrs S W & T Cornelius, Davidstow.
