Stags auctioneers report a total of 358 cattle were forward for the annual Goose Fair cattle sale at Tavistock Livestock Centre.

Trade was very similar to last month with the best trade for the stronger and well-fleshed cattle.

Top price on the day was £1,050 for three 19mo South Devon steers from Messrs G C & V J Hill, Lamerton. Next best was £1,000 for a 27mo Charolais x steer from Messrs I G Mortimore & Son, Chagford.

Heifers topped at £950 twice both times for Messrs B J & L Landick, Sampford Spiney for two 24mo Charolais cross and one 24mo South Devon. The Landick Family also had steers to £990 for 24mo Limmousin cross.

Mrs N Furse, Beaworthy had a lovely run of 24 16/18mo South Devon steers which sold in three bunches of eight making £985, £965 and £905.

Other notable prices included £960 for three 17mo Charolais cross steers from Messrs M H & S R S Eggins, Roborough; £950 for two 18mo South Devon steers from Mr A J Friend, Coryton; £930 for two 17mo South Devon steers from Mr W A Kilfedder, Tavistock who also had heifers to £905 for two 18mo Limousin crosses.

There were a number of native bred cattle forward which topped at £905 for 18mo Beef Shorthorn steers from Mr Tom Roskilly, Peter Tavy. Galloway steers sold to £725 from Messrs G Abel & Son, Peter Tavy; and Galloway heifers sold to £715 for 16mo from Mrs J Littlejohns, Peter Tavy.

Younger cattle were harder to sell with the most forward most wanted. Top price was £890 for a 12mo Aberdeen Angus steer from Mr T F Jasper, Launceston.

There were more excellent runs of store cattle, and prices included £790 for four 15/16mo South Devon steers from Mr E Dodd, Peter Tavy who also had 16mo Saler cross heifers to £790; £880 for three 15mo Limousin cross steers from Mr A W Francis, Okehampton; £820 for 4 15/17mo South Devon Heifers from Mr R H Murrin, Bere Alston; £740 for 3 15/16mo Welsh Black x heifers from Messrs D H & C Legassick, Sheepstor; £760 for 2 15mo Charolais x steers from Messrs G T J & A R Medland, Tavistock who also had 14mo Charolais cross heifer to £670; £740 for two 15/16mo Aberdeen Angus cross heifers from Messrs W K J & M R Harding, Throwleigh.

The sale started with the breeding cattle which topped at £1,120 for an eight yo South Devon cow with her four mo Charolais cross heifer calf at foot for Mr M H Northmore, Horrabridge. Closely followed at £1,090 for a 6 ½ yo South Devon cow with her three mo Limousin cross heifer calf at foot from Mrs J Webster, Lydford.

A nice run of six in-calf Devon cows from Mr R W Dymond, Launceston, sold to £750 for a five yo cow Pd five months in calf. Grazing cows topped at £670 for a South Devon from Messrs B J & L Landick, Sampford Spiney.
