Ninety young farmers from across the south west will be heading for an action-packed activity weekend this summer thanks to sponsorship from NFU Mutual.

Members of Young Farmers' Clubs (YFC) aged 10 to 17 from Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Gloucestershire, Somerset, and Wiltshire will be heading to Acorn Adventure in the Brecon Beacons this August.

The activities weekend is designed to challenge the youngsters to try new skills, to promote team building and collaboration, and to enable young farmers to network with their peers across the region.

Ben Cavill, Cornwall YFC Vice Chairman, said: “Our activities weekend is the biggest event of the year for junior members in the South West and, as this is an event for our youngest members, we really want to get them enthused about YFC so that they become our future leaders and farmers.

“As well as developing skills, working with local communities and learning about farming, being part of young farmers is about having fun and making new connections. Without sponsors like NFU Mutual, events like these just wouldn’t happen and we are grateful for their support.”

Sponsoring the event is leading rural insurer NFU Mutual, which plays an active role in supporting young farmers through a range of initiatives.

Jim McLaren MBE, Non-Executive Director for NFU Mutual, met with members of Cornwall YFC ahead of the event.

Jim explained: “Young farmers are our future and so we are proud to be supporting this exciting event. By supporting events like this we are enabling young farmers to challenge themselves and try new skills. We want to ensure the agricultural industry continues to evolve and progress, and these are the young people who can help to do that.”

From abseiling to archery, bush craft to raft building, the four-day camp is open to any YFC member in the region under the age of 18. The annual event is this year being led by Cornwall YFC.
