This year’s Royal Cornwall Show received 110,704 visitors despite the rapid decline in the weather, retaining its position as the largest event on the Cornish calendar.

The Glastonbury-like traffic entering and leaving the show reflected these numbers, with six-mile queues creating long delays in both directions.

The show kicked off with some sunny weather, a pleasant surprise for all, putting everyone in high spirits, but Friday saw an onslaught of rain and wind.

Showcasing the best in local agriculture, entertainment, food and drink and of course, shopping, the show attracted visitors from all different walks of life.

This included Her Royal Highness Princess Alexandra, who visited on the Thursday.

She was escorted by several police motorbikes and a crowd of onlookers. It was the sixth time the Princess has visited the show and she enjoyed a tour of the showground. The Royal visit drew to a close in the Cornwall Food & Farming Pavilion, where Her Royal Highness enjoyed talking with food and drink producers and left with a hamper full of Cornish delicacies.

Many visitors were surprised to see the armed police at this year’s show, although their presence was appreciated. The other emergency services were also present, with Cornwall Fire and Rescue Service’s fire investigation dogs Archie and Woody drawing a constant crowd of admirers.

Some incredible displays took place in the main ring this year, with large crowds forming for the Atkinson Action Horses of Poldark fame and the Jason Smyth Adrenaline Tour. The RAF Falcons parachute team made a dramatic entrance and the RAF Police Dog display team also performed.

The food and drink tent was constantly bustling as visitors sampled Cornwall’s finest.

It was another great year for The Cornwall Cider Championships, with Farmhouse Cider Champion awarded to Kevin Strange and Open Cider Champion going to Mark Venton from Ventons Devon Cyder.

New competitions this year included the all female sheep shearing competition, won by Pauline Bolay from Manitoba, Canada who pipped New Zealand’s Jills Angus Burney into second place in a field of four competitors.

Also new was the Young Farmers Pasty Eating Contest, won by James Harris from Wadebridge Young Farmers Club.

Show secretary Christopher Riddle said: “Thankfully the weather was good on two of the days, but it’s not surprising the attendance wasn’t quite as high as it might have been. Visitors turned out in force on the Thursday and Saturday and a good number braved the elements on the Friday, with many reporting that they still thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Come rain or shine we’re really grateful for the support of those who visit, compete and trade at the show. The atmosphere that the Royal Cornwall is renowned for shone through and we enjoyed a very good number of livestock, horse and small animal entries.”

“Our hard-working, dedicated team of volunteer stewards, staff and contractors worked extremely hard to ensure the weather conditions had a minimal impact on proceedings.”

The post show clean-up is now underway and planning for next year's event (4, 5 and 6 June 2020) has already commenced.
