155 Prime and untested forward cattle

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report an excellent entry of 155 prime cattle and a good trade to match the quality on offer.

Top was 210ppk for a very shapely, young (12m) ad lib fed Limousin steer from MJ Tuckett & Partners, Exeter, who sold others similar at 189.5ppk twice. Very lean, pure bred Limousins at 203.5 (25m & 564kg) 201.5 (27m & 608kg) and 193.50ppk (25m & 536kg) from MW & S Edwards. Well bred and fed continental steers from KJ & S Bishop, Enmore, saw the top end at 202.5 (Ch) 195.5 and 194ppk (Lims). A good run from BA Richards, Williton peaked at 192.5ppk for a Limousin. Classy red Limousin steer at 190.5ppk from CJM Shackleton, Wiveliscombe. Native steers peaked at 189.5ppk for an Angus from PRS & EB Scott, Axbridge.

Steers sold to a huge £1,384.82 for a Charolais (817kg) from RE Webber, Stringston, who sold another at £1,379.73 (814kg). Blues at £1,381.59 from JRA Quick and £1,341.60, AE Quick, Chard. Limousin at £1,348.74, CJM Shackleton; Charolais at £1,329.69, BA Richards and further Blue £1,313.50, M & B Rich, Binegar.

Heifers peaked at 205ppk for a superb black Limousin from TE Harris, Kingston Seymour. Top drawer and very clean type Limousin from J & S Vinnicombe & Son, Ottery St Mary, at 203.5ppk. The same price was achieved by CJM Shackleton for a shapely and well fleshed black Limousin. Proper run of butchers’ Limousin heifers at 201.5, 199.5, 198, 194 (x2) 193.5, 193 and 189ppk from PJ Hobbs, Minehead. Well bred Limousins from KJ & S Bishop at 195.5, 194.5 and 192ppk. Good Limousins at 195, 190.5 and 190ppk J & DJ Cotterill. Smart Charolais at 191ppk twice from both L & A Maddock & Co, Wiveliscombe and BA Ricahrds, Williton.

Heifers sold to £1,314.61 for a Limousin from CJM Shackleton. Charolais at £1,242.24 and £1,177.60 from KJ & S Bishop; £1,155.70, RE Webber and £1,153.64 and £1,146.39, L & A Maddock & Co. Further Limousins at £1189, TE Harris; £1,140.75, J & DJ Cotterill and £1,129.43, J & S Vinnicombe. Blue heifer at £1,177.88, CG, GR & MS Spiller, Upottery.

76 Barren cows and cull stock bulls

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report an increased entry of 76 cull stock met a keen trade. Well fleshed cows in particular sold very well to 143.5ppk for a Limousin from KJ & S Bishop, Enmore, who sold further good Limousin cows at 135.5 and 134.5ppk. Simmentals at 135.5 and 131.5ppk from R Binning, Draycott. Feeding Blonde at 129.5ppk from JM Darby, Lydeard St Lawrence.

Native cows rose to 139.5ppk for a well covered Angus from RJ Maltby, Long Bredy, who also sold well fleshed Shorthorns at 133.5 and 128.5 and a Devon at 124.5ppk. Herefords at 127.5ppk, RW Darby, Bridgwater; 124.5 and 120.5ppk, MA & SS Sanders, Luckwell Bridge and 122.5ppk, PA Kingston, Hewish.

Sucklers sold to £1,178.85 for a Simmental from R Binning. Limousins at £1,163.79, £1,051.48 and £1,045.07, KJ & S Bishop. Angus at £1,141.11 and a Devon at £1027.13 both from RJ Maltby.

Dairy breeds peaked at 119.5ppk for a Friesian from F & EJ Strawbridge & Sons, Axminster, who sold further good meat Friesians at 116.5 and 114.5ppk (x4). Holsteins to 117.5ppk from SJ & SJ Church, Highbridge. Further Friesians at 116.5ppk, AB, RG & JL Darby, Middlezoy and 116.5ppk, P & N Tapp, Washford.

Steaky cows 100 to 110ppk. Plain cows 90 to 95ppk. Bones below.

Black and whites sold to £934.13 for a 795kg Holstein. No real heavy cows forward.

2242 Finished lambs and hoggs

Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a larger entry of 1194 hoggs sold to a very similar trade – strong for the handyweights but remaining difficult for heavier hoggs. The best handyweights sold to 242, 222 and 221ppk from RB Cox. Others 225 and 210ppk from GH Hayes & Sons; 222ppk from AJ Willcox; 214ppk from J Ryall; 211ppk from R Young and WN Chick & Sons.

Top prices were £102 from AJ Willcox. Others £100 from RB Cox; £99 from AL & JL Burrough; £98.50 and £96.50 from MB & KN Crabb; £97 from RR Creed & Son and MP & DM Hine; £96.50 from GH Hayes & Sons, DGB & CN Tratt and RH Hill and £95.50 from RJ, HA & MR Popham and AA, L & R Johnson. Overall average £91.25.

A much larger entry of 1048 lambs sold at lower levels for all forward as numbers flood out nationally due to the fine weather. The best quality were, however, keenly contested and sold to 257ppk from D Day. Others 255ppk from AGF Lockyer; 251ppk from J & A Hole and SJ Millard; 250 and 249ppk from RA Willcox; 250ppk from S Francis and 249ppk from JE Quick, NF Newman and RJ Smith.

Top prices per head were £100.50 from J & A Hole. Others £100 from RA Willcox and MW & S Edwards; £99.50 from AGF Lockyer; £98.50 from AS Cowling; £98 from SJ Millard and £97.50 from AF & RD Tucker & Sons and RG Drew & Sons. Overall average £92.08.
