Update: The man's family have been traced as of 1.30pm on March 20.

Police are trying to trace the family of a man whose body was found in the water off Falmouth's Prince of Wales Pier on Monday.

A force spokesperson said the identify of the man was believed to be known, but he had yet to be formally identified.

Officers are continuing to look into the circumstances of how he came to be in the water, with emergency services called out just before 3pm following reports that a body had been seen in the water between the pier and Greenbank.

One witness said she initially thought it was a dog in the water, but upon having a closer look she "saw two feet."

Police, coastguards, the ambulance service and the RNLI were all scrambled, with Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team starting a search of the shoreline.

Falmouth Inshore Lifeboat launched to search the water and quickly found the body of a man.

The crew then recovered the body before taking it back to the lifeboat station in order for the matter to be passed into the hands of the coroner.

A coastguard spokesperson said: "A further search of the immediate area was then carried out by coastguard team members and RNLI crew.

"Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the gentleman at this sad time."

A police spokesperson confirmed that officers were continuing with enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death.

It was the second body to be found in local waters within four days, after the body of a woman was found in Truro last Friday.

Police, backed up by Falmouth Coastguard Rescue Team, were called to the river bank at Garras Wharf, close to the Tesco store, she was found at 10am.
