The Devon County Agricultural Association has announced the appointment of a new Honorary Show Director for its flagship event, the Devon County Show which is held annually on the showground at Westpoint, Exeter.

Stewart Stevens takes up the reins for the 2019 show and beyond, replacing David Parish who retired in June.

Mary Quicke MBE, Chairman of the Council of the DCAA, is delighted that Stewart has accepted the role: "Stewart is one of the most respected individuals on the agricultural show circuit. We have no doubt that his vast experience and wealth of knowledge will add tremendous value to Devon County Show’s progression."

Commenting on his experience with the Devon County Show, Stewart said:

"I’ve worked across all areas of the Devon County Show in several different capacities, for over forty years so it’s very much in my blood. I’ve competed, judged, and sat on all sorts of different committees from horse shows to health and safety. I also have a lot to thank the show for, having met my wife Claire there!

"What strikes me about the Devon County Show is how well all the team pull together – from the office staff to the stewards through to the hundreds of volunteers who work round the clock to make this great event happen, year after year. The highlights for me have been the fantastic displays in the main arena over the years including the Household Cavalry, the Canadian Mounted Police and the Dancing Diggers. Of course, there have been a few hiccoughs along the way – after all a show wouldn’t be a show without the odd bullock or a swarm of bees escaping on set up day!"

Aside from working in conjunction with the new Show Manager at Devon County Show, Sam Mackenzie-Green, Stewart is also keen to motivate the next generation to join the stewarding teams.

"A volunteering role such as this provides a great grounding for young people and also looks good on a CV. If I can persuade my own 15-year-old son to put down his phone and get hands-on, I’m sure I can convince others his age to sign up, too.

"I’m extremely honoured to be part of the show in such a privileged capacity," Stewart continued. "My predecessor David’s approach to the show over the last 20 years has been both tireless and relentlessly committed. He’ll be a tough act to follow but I’m ready to give it my very best shot!"
