ONE of Mylor Bridge School's longest serving teachers was recognised on her retirement when the whole village came together to giver her a good send off after 28 years of teaching.

The last day of term saw a fantastic celebration to recognise the inspirational teaching career of Mrs Vyv Curnow.

The children entertained the staff, parents and locals with a programme of singing, piano playing, poetry and speeches. Mrs Curnow was presented with many gifts from children, staff and parents, including National Trust membership for her and her husband.

Generations of children will remember her enthusiasm and gusto for teaching as well as her nurturing personality. Not only did she teach every subject throughout the entire school, she was the driving force behind many and varying activities including assemblies, camps, village events, fundraising days, plays and concerts, very often wearing fancy dress!

Specialising in the teaching of PE, Vyv introduced hundreds of children to sports and fitness, encouraging them to participate in sporting competitions where they brought back a spectacular haul of medals and trophies.

Vyv also led the music programme at Mylor Bridge School, inspiring the pupils to try a range of musical instruments and organising regular concerts where the children were able to showcase their singing and musical skills.

Mrs Curnow is going to leave a large Vyv shaped hole in the school community and will be greatly missed by children and staff. However, she will always be busy with her family, looking after her grandson Luca and enjoying a very well-earned rest!
