This Easter the RSPB is inviting visitors to explore Swell Wood nature reserve in Somerset to see the south west’s largest heronry.

Abbie Thorne, RSPB Somerset visitor experience manager, said: “RSPB Swell wood is an amazing place to visit at this time of year - the heronry located just in front of the reserve’s hide, is an incredible spectacle of nature.

“With over one-hundred heron nests visible in the trees, the noise and drama is a not to be missed experience. In fact, the Swell Wood heronry is the largest in the south west and typically a number of little egrets also nest amongst the herons too. 2014 was our record-breaking year when heron nests totalled a whopping one hundred and fifty! Twenty-six little egrets also managed to secure a nest spot in amongst the hubbub. With so many birds competing for the best spots, it’s like watching a soap opera unfold.”

RSPB staff and volunteers will be on hand over the Easter holidays to show visitors the sights and sounds of this busy spring-time reserve and answer any questions, as the herons build their nests and feed their young.
