Coup for Herefords
THE Royal Show proved to be a major coup for the Hereford breed.
The Herefords were the talk of the show, attracting much favourable comment and also scoring a notable success in one of the Royal Show's most prestigious interbreed competitions.
The Hereford entry stood Reserve to a very strong Limousin entry for the famous Burke Trophy which is awarded to the Best Pair of animals from all Beef Breeds." The Hereford pair were made up of Greenyards 1 Archie, a bull bred by Philip and Allison Allman from Sutton St Nicholas, Herefordshire and five year old cow, Phocle Dowager V123 from David Jones, Ross on Wye, Herefordshire.
Judge John Jeffries from Kelso, Scotland, a well known breeder of Charolais and Simmental cattle chose the Limousin and Hereford pairs from the 21 beef breeds represented at the show to receive the Burke awards.
Following the Burke Trophy success, the Hereford pair teamed up with three Hereford bulls to make up the Group of Five.
All five cattle were provided by Hereford breeders from Herefordshire. Two bulls from P & A Allman, a cow from D M Jones and two bulls, one from the Freetown herd owned by R A Bradstock & Partners and a Bosa bull bred by G Blandford & Son. The Group of Five were awarded the Reserve Championship Rosette by Judge Norman W Smith from Suffolk to complete a very successful show for the Hereford Breed.
