Youngster will be a probationary judge
REBECCA Hurd, at 19, became one of the youngest people ever invited by the Devon Cattle Breeders Society to be a probationary judge and this June judged the Devon Classes at the Three Counties Show in Malvern.
Rebecca's cattle-farming background stood her in good stead and she was "delighted" to be able to put many years of experience to the test.
No stranger to competition herself, Rebecca won "Reserve Breed Champion" at the Bath and West Show this year with her Zwartbles Sheep.
"My experience with sheep was very limited", said Rebecca. "But once I saw this particular breed I liked them so much I eventually talked my father round to letting me purchase five, we now have 14 and several rosettes!"
After finishing her A-Levels at Richard Huish College, Rebecca went on to obtain a Certificate of Higher Education in agricultural management at Cannington College and, after three years of working part-time, she has now become a full-time member of staff for Greenslade Taylor Hunt and works as PA to Robert Venner, managing partner at the Sedgmoor Auction Centre. Robert said: "Rebecca joined us in Taunton Market and is steadily rising up through the ranks.
Her knowledge of livestock and contacts with pedigree breeders is a real asset."
