Show was ‘a Cracker’


AUCTIONEERS Greenslade Taylor Hunt had a record entry for their first Christmas Cracker Show and Sale that was held at Sedgemoor Auction Centre when 174 head went through the ring.

Sponsorship of £850 drew a superb quality entry from 28 vendors from as far afield as the Isle of Wight and Kent which resulted in 37 lots selling for over £2,000. A packed ringside produced 47 different purchasers who had travelled from Cornwall, Herefordshire, Worcester and Staffordshire to make the most of the opportunity to buy quality cattle from South West Breeders.

Judge John Taylor’s Champion fittingly took the day’s top price at £3,045. This was the calved heifer class winner Moorshard Silky Marie bred by RK and SG Miller and Sons from four generations of VG and a show winning family. She joins the well known Ruckhall herd of PJ Andrews, Herefordshire. Reserve Champion came from Tim Quick’s Mendip herd, selling for 2,700 gns to the same purchaser. She was Mendip Outside May 2nd PI who won the calved cow class. As a second calver by Comestar Outside and was classified VG85 as a heifer.

At 2450gns was Walkabout Riki 2nd a calved heifer consigned by EG Gay and Sons and at the same price was the Picston Shottle daughter Treetop Shottle Jasmine consigned by Jeff and Lucinda Morgan.

Thirty in-calf heifers due in the spring travelled from the Isle of Wight and sold to 1,650gns for Brian Morris’ Nunwell Peridot Katrina 5th who was by Delta Peridot and out of a 11,000kgs dam.

Sixteen-month old heifers topped at 890gns for Sidedowns Tiergan Kersch 228th who had a PLI of £146 and was consigned by R and J Bowles. Commercial heifer calves from TI Miller and partners sold for 560gns.

Of the three bulls on offer top price of 2,000gns was achieved by RH Harris with Winkleigh BX Sharp ET who was by Emerald-AXR-SA T Baxter and from the Tallent Sheila family.

A small entry of Jerseys sold to 1,200gns for Hareplain Bombers Elizabeth (GP83) from S E Lane and Partners of Kent sold for 1,200 gns.
