THE overall winner was of the EYA at the Royal Bath & West Show this year was Parkeston Grammar School.
The members of which were presented with their award by HRH the Prince of Wales at the main Bandstand on the same day (pic attached). The list of finalists included environmental groups from Patchway Community College, Almondsbury, Bristol; Parkestone Grammar School, Poole, Dorset; Danesfield CofE School, Taunton, Somerset; and St Joseph’s Catholic School, Salisbury and Wiltshire.
Once again members of the Judging Panel have been most impressed with the standard of entries, which were on display at the Main Ring Judges Box on the ground floor for the whole of the Show. Brigadier Hemsley, the Chairman of the Judging Panel, said: “We are delighted with the results of this year’s competition which have emphasised the quality and commitment of the youth groups to their projects. All the children were very enthusiastic and committed to what they were doing. A great deal of interest has been shown and this year the standards were outstanding. We are particularly grateful for the great support from HSBC which, with the Royal Bath & West of England Society and the Farming and Countryside Education programme, sponsors this annual award scheme.”
The award scheme is open to formal as well as ad hoc youth groups from the four counties of Bristol, Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire. It is run by the Society and administered through the FACE Regional Representative; the initiative being enthusiastically supported by HSBC. One nomination each year is selected from each of the counties covered by the Society. Bearing in mind the main objective of fostering and encouraging interest in environmental matters, the selections are made on the basis of rewarding originality and effort, irrespective of age, provided this is within an overall quality project. The four county nominations are assessed by a panel of judges who decide upon a Regional winner. Each of the four county nominations receives a souvenir award and certificate. A special trophy is given to the overall winner who is not announced until the day of the presentation; all the awards being presented each year at the Royal Bath & West Annual Show.
