Greenslade Taylor
Hunt, in conjunction
with Symonds & Sampson, report from the dispersal sale of the milking and in calf heifer portion of Rick Amor's homebred dairy herd, at Barton Farm, Sherborne, Dorset, in July
IT was interesting to
note that out of the 249 cattle sold, only 34 remained in Dorset.
Forty one travelled
north of the county and the remaining 174 were sold to Somerset, Devon and Cornwall where the demand for dairy cattle shows no sign of abating.
The demand for compact dual-purpose cows was very strong with the sale topping at 2100gns for a Moet Lookout daughter that had calved in October at three years of age and had been served again in April to Drake.
This smart heifer was giving 29.4kgs with a low cell count of 58. She just beat the previous lot who was by the same bull and of the same age having calved in December and sold for 2050gns.
Dry cows sold to 1900gns for a Carol Mascot Toldo daughter that was due to her second in August.
Moet Lookout had certainly put his stamp
on the herd with the only freshly calved heifer of
the day by him selling
for 1880gns, which was matched by his incalf heifer due in August.
Served heifers that
had been running with
the Hereford bull sold to 1740gns for a daughter
of Wa-Del Convincer out
of a 9,000 kgs dam.
What was very much
a family day generated
the following exceptional averages: Dairy cows
and heifers £1174; calved heifer £1974; incalf
heifers £1485.86.
