NADIS has launched a new parasite control package for farmers, available through local veterinary practices.

The parasite control package includes a more detailed, local (40km2) monthly parasite forecast, and interactive parasite control planners for both cattle and sheep.

The planners allow farmers to work with their vet to produce a yearly plan for parasite control, encouraging optimal management and treatment strategies. The planner is highly visual, interactive and easy to use. It can also be used to complement existing health plans.

The forecasts will include detailed Nematodirus and fluke forecasts during risk periods, and will help farmers to plan their anthelmintic use accordingly.

Professor Mike Taylor, a recognised European veterinary specialist in parasitology, worked alongside NADIS to develop the planners, and produces the monthly parasite forecasts from detailed Met Office data. He said: "Effective parasite control benefits both the health and productivity of animals on farm, and is key for the responsible use of anthelmintics."
