Award for service to sheep industry
HONOURED: Lord Rooker with David Darke at the ceremony
HONOURED: Lord Rooker with David Darke at the ceremony

THE presentation of the 2007 NSA George Hedley Memorial Award was made by Lord Rooker, Minister for Sustainable Farming and Food, and Animal Welfare to SW long established sheep farmer and breeder David Darke at an industry dinner recently.

In 1992 David was elected as a representative to the Wool Board upon which he served at a National Level until his retirement last year.

David has been a keen supporter of NSA for over 35 years.

He strongly believes that producer co-operation is extremely important to sheep farmers if their efforts to cope with the challenges of the everyday marketplace are to succeed.

David has served as NSA Regional Chairman and continues to be a member of the South West committee. In 1988 the NSA South West ram sale was started and David has chaired the organising committee since that time. This event is now firmly established as a leading multi-breed sale renowned for the quality of rams it attracts for commercial buyers.

NSA Chairman of Council David Raine - himself a noted sheep farmer from Cumbria paid a glowing tribute to David at the dinner highlighting the real difference David had made to the sheep industry through the representative work he had done and through his determination to make a success of the NSA SW Ram Sale.
