A RECORD entry of over 80 ploughmen from across Dorset and beyond attended the annual joint Wareham and Purbeck Young Farmers' Club and Purbeck Vintage Ploughing Committee's ploughing match held by permission of Mr John Aplin, of Chamberlaynes, Bere Regis.

Ever since the competition was resurrected back in 1976 they have been busy raising money for charity at the event. This year Macmillan Cancer Support will benefit from the day's activities.

Apart from the ten class winners the ten judges were also looking to find the Dorset representatives to go forward to the National Ploughing Championships 2008 in the Young Farmers and Vintage classes. Martin Farwell (19) and a member of Blandford YFC took the spoils off his twin brother, Matt, who this year was representing the Young Farmers.

The vintage classes were won by Peter Stone driving a Fordson with a two-furrow Ransomes plough and Colin Heard, who was reserve champion on the day, driving an International with two-furrow International plough.

Malcolm Selby of East Holme, Wareham improved on his result from last year when he was reserve champion. Not only was he judged the Purbeck champion but also the overall champion on the day.

The Wareham and Purbeck YFC ploughing match is the last of the Young Farmers matches being held in Dorset this year. However, they look forward to Puddletown YFC's second annual match on Sunday, February 16, 2008.

Dorset Young Farmers Clubs are open to everyone aged 10 to 26 whether they have a farming background or not. There are ten clubs within rural Dorset with over 400 members. To find the nearest club and join in the fun contact Dorset Young Farmers on 01305 263947 or visit www.dorsetyfc.org.uk.
