BRIAN Etherington Meat Co Ltd of Redruth beat stiff competition to take first place in the Best Volume Produced Sausage category, in the prestigious 2007 Foodservice Sausage of the Year competition. The company picked up the much coveted title for their "Cornish Premier Gold" sausage.

Organised by the British Pig Executive (BPEX), the annual competition rewards product innovation and excellence. Nearly 270 entries were received this year from butchers, suppliers and caterers competing for winner's titles across five separate categories: traditional pork sausage, speciality pork sausage, best pub sausage, best reduced fat/reduced salt sausage and best volume produced sausage.

The company's sausage, which uses locally sourced, quality assured pork scored highly with the judges to top their category. Mark Etherington, sales manager said: "This is the first time we've entered the BPEX competition so naturally, we are very pleased to have done so well.

"We developed the Cornish Premier Gold sausage some 18 months ago after spending time with a butcher and speaking to many hoteliers about their requirements.

"Although it is a volume produced sausage, it is still a quality product and that is what our customers want. It is made using 80% pork and a combination of added herbs for a succulent and tasty sausage. We use local ingredients and free range pork and it is this detail that really adds a point of difference to our customers and the end consumer.

"It takes a lot of time and effort to develop new products and enter these awards so to win is great reward."

BPEX foodservice trade manager, Tony Goodger, said: "Our congratulations go to Etheringtons and their success in what was a very tough competition.

"Now in its fifth year, the Foodservice Sausage of the Year competition is growing in prominence as butchers and sausage manufacturers supplying the foodservice industry get to put forward their popular, new or innovative products for the highly coveted award."
