FOR the first time in the Holstein Society's almost 100-year history, a Devon man has been elected national president.
Mr William Ley, who farms with his family at Thurborough, Sutcombe, was elected president at the Durrant House hotel, Bideford on September 4.
Over 200 people attended the three-day conference, which included herd visits to the Laity family at Truro, the Palmer family at Chawleigh, and a visit to the president's own herd at Sutcombe.
Additional visits to the Eden Project and Rosemoor Gardens were also arranged, with the delegates travelling by bus to the various events, which were extremely well supported with the addition of local dairy farmers and pedigree breeders.
The conference finished with a dinner for over 250 people at the Durrant House hotel.
Mark Bromell of Kivells Auctioneers, who acted as secretary for the event, said that it is an honour to have William Ley as the society's national president.
The conference was praised by those attending from as far afield as Ireland, Scotland, Lancashire and Wales.
The visitors said they thoroughly enjoyed their time in the South West and were full of compliments for the quality of South West Holsteins and the friendly spirit of the Devon and Cornwall clubs.
Mark Bromell said that it had been a dis-appointment not to be able to hold the celebration sale of elite maiden heifers at Holsworthy market due to foot and mouth, but this sale has now been re-organised, and will be held on Holsworthy Dairy Evening on October 25.
It should, he said, make an extremely interesting sale.
