Large Herd Seminar will focus on improving dairy herd performance

Practical Solutions to Improving Herd Performance is the theme of the Third Large Herd Seminar. Aimed at innovative, forward-thinking dairy producers and veterinary surgeons, the 2008 event will take place on Monday June 30 and Tuesday July 1 at the Ardencote Manor Hotel and Country Club, Claverdon in Warwickshire.

Since its inception in 2006 the Large Herd Seminar has become established as a must-attend' event in the annual calendar. This year's event will focus on delivering practical take-home' information and advice from a range of eminent speakers, each of whom is involved in various aspects of managing or advising large dairy herds.

The programme will commence on Monday evening with the Large Herd Vet pre-Seminar entitled Troubleshooting Herd Performance'. Open to both veterinary surgeons and dairy herd managers, it will cover a wide range of topics, including the use of analysis, rumen health, the benefits of different dry-cow strategies and fertility.

On Tuesday, the Large Herd Seminar will encompass eight presentations over four sessions, including Looking after the cow', Taking control of management', Fertility and reproductive performance' and Where the problems lie', which will feature a special presentation by Professor Carlo Sgoifo Rossi from the University of Milan on mycotoxins and nitrates.

Amongst the farmer speakers will be Neil Christiansen, who will explain how he goes about improving herd performance at Steanbow Farms in Somerset. The Seminar will also include a presentation by John E. Gilliland, Director of Dairy Operations for McArthur Farms in Florida, who is responsible for four 2000-cow milking facilities averaging 9500 - 11000kg in a tropical environment, together with an 8200-head replacement heifer operation, while Dr Blaine N Ellison DVM, who is responsible for feeding approximately 10 per cent of the dairy cows in Florida, will give his views.

Warwick Bastard of Lillico Attlee, one of the organizers, comments: "Since its inception in 2006, the annual Large Herd Seminar has attracted increasing support from leading dairy farmers and veterinary surgeons. It has become renowned for providing a stimulating, thought-provoking environment for practical professionals in the dairy industry and this year we have decided to focus specifically on the problems which limit performance, including cow comfort."

Because the 2007 Large Herd Seminar sold out very quickly and attracted producers from all over the country the organizers recommend that those wishing to attend make their booking as soon as possible, especially if overnight accommodation is required.

Tickets for the Large Herd Vet pre-seminar are priced at £55, while those for the Large Herd Seminar cost £75. A subsidised rate is available for dairy farmers and managers at £35 for the day seminar. Delegates wishing to attend both sessions and stay overnight at the Ardencote Manor Hotel and Country Club can enjoy an inclusive, discounted rate of £210.
