Every pupil of Ashill Primary School near Ilminster recently saw the workings of their local dairy farm first hand and there were some tough questions asked!

Mr and Mrs Fry hosted the 35 pupils at Hatchers Pond Farm as part of the school's topic ‘Farm to Fork’ which focuses on where food comes from.

Pupils had a fully interactive afternoon at the farm. Children had the chance to see cows and calves, chickens and lambs and to make flour from grain. The youngest children collected eggs and everyone had the opportunity to hold a week-old lamb.

Mrs Fry said: “The children had so many interesting questions such as the reasons for the cow’s tags, why the milk is steaming when it comes out of the cow and if cows are black with white spots or white with black spots!"

The visit greatly added to the understanding of the ‘Farm to Fork’ topic and the children were delighted with the goody bags supplied by the Agricultural Development Board. The school would like to thank Mr and Mrs Fry for hosting the visit and the Speke family for donating wheat grain.
