Freshers’ fun in the sun!

The new academic year got in to full swing at Duchy College Rosewarne last week, part of The Cornwall College Group, when the College’s students’ union held its annual Freshers’ Fair!

This year’s fun-packed event was bigger and better than ever. Students were able to get to know each other, find out about the range of services on offer to them during their time at college, peruse the stalls, gather information and collect freebies.

Exhibitors included the Army, Navy, Redruth Tennis Club, Brook and Health Promotions, Cornwall Foundation Trust, YAY, the Mental Health Research Team, Merlin Cinema Redruth giving away popcorn and a chance to win merchandising, Volunteer Kenya, Rollers roller skating rink doing demonstrations; and plenty of edible and useful goodies were on offer for free.

Kate Snook, Student Liaison Officer at Duchy College Rosewarne, explained: “The atmosphere has been great at Rosewarne, the sun has been shining and the students have all been telling me how nice it was to be able to wander around and meet new people and find out what else is available on their campus.”

On the day there was the chance for the students to get competitive in a game of laser tag and rehydrate themselves afterwards by enjoying a bottle of water courtesy of The Cornish Oven and relish an ice-cream in the sun. The College’s canteen, Choughs, was also on hand with free burgers and a range of homemade tasters to promote their menus.

Kate added: “It’s been a great start to college life for these students as it’s important for us to show our students that while studying can be hard work, the wider college experience is fun. There are plenty of opportunities to get involved and lots of support available.”

One of the students there on the day, Craig Jones, who is studying Plant Operations Level 2, said: “I was in the construction industry labouring before I joined Rosewarne, but I wanted to get involved in the vehicle side of things. My younger brother had studied here previously and he said it was a great place, so I chose a course based on what I wanted to do to help me get a better job.”

Students left the event with lots of free foods, pens, bands, leaflets and information to help support them through their studies.

“I’m amazed by how generous local businesses have been in supporting this event and would like to thank them for their generous donations and continuous support,” added Kate.

Duchy College Rosewarne offers a range of full and part-time courses from animal management to floristry and plant operations. For further information about studying at the College, please call 0330 123 4784 or visit www.duchy.ac.uk.
