A spoonful of sugar and a perfect appearance from patron John Nettles made this year’s Mare and Foal Sanctuary Open Day the best yet.

The event took place on August 2 at the charity’s Visitor Centre near Totnes and had a host of surprises, including a Mary Poppins-themed ridden demonstration, a trip to the circus and even some llama agility.

More than 500 visitors attended the event and helped the Sanctuary to raise £1693.63, which will go towards its continued work rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming horses in need.

As well as holding lots of family activities, games and trade stands, the staff held their own fancy dress competition, which was won by Sheila Giles and Antony Pilkington with ponies Tarren and Cas. John Nettles also came along in the afternoon to sign autographs, chat to visitors and enjoy a VIP carriage ride.

Mr Nettles said: “The weather was fantastic, the people were fantastic and the whole experience was a pleasure.

“I certainly enjoyed the carriage ride – it just shows how far these horses can come with training thanks to the wonderful dedication of the staff.

“I’m delighted to represent such a wonderful charity. It was great to see everyone in such good spirits.”

Centre manager Tracy Gray said: “Our annual Open Day gives people the perfect opportunity to see what we do first-hand and we were delighted that so many visitors came along.

“The weather was very kind to us and it was great to see people of all ages enjoying meeting the horses, watching the displays and, of course, chatting to John Nettles.

“Lots of people said it was our best Open Day ever, and we’re so grateful to everyone who came for helping us to raise so much money. We look forward to welcoming them all back soon.”
