This April, a new grain store insect fogging treatment - to replace traditional smoke generators - is being launched and distributed by Barrettine.

AquaPy® is applied through a ULV fogging applicator and Barrettine estimate that when farmers apply it, there will be significant savings.

“When applying AquaPy® farmers will make a saving of about £16 compared with the cost of each actellic smoke application,” said David Shelton, manager of Barrettine.

“Therefore, a farmer treating a reasonable sized barn with four bays in it, can look to save on average £300 per year by applying AquaPy® instead of smoke generators,” said David.

There are many benefits when the new fogging application is used. Fogging empty grain stores with AquaPy® is a very effective alternative to using individual smoke generators as these require the operator to light each fuse in turn … a time-consuming job.

In addition, fuses can be faulty, and resistance to the organophosphate based active ingredients can be found.

The product delivers a dose of active ingredient in minutes, and re-entry to the building - post application - is permitted after just one hour. The use of fogging equipment allows direct flow, and enables treatment of inaccessible areas such as ducts and voids.

AquaPy® , from Bayer, distributed by Barrettine, contains natural pyrethrins for the control of beetles, weevils and moths, and is authorised for use in empty grain stores through ultra low volume application using either hot or cold foggers. It is also available as a low volume surface spray.

David highlighted a key benefit of using AquaPy® over traditional smoke generators. “Ultimately it’s speed and convenience that marks this product apart. Farmers used to having to crawl into ducts and voids and set off each fuse in turn, retreating as they go, will now be able to set the fogging machine and walk out the door.”

“Our customers have identified a basic requirement for a product like this to come to the market. The main frustration being faulty fuses, and the associated costs. This product is sure to be popular in a market where fast and efficient treatment is needed more than ever,” added David.
