IT has been 92 years since the Devon Federation of Young Farmers’ Clubs (YFC) was formed, however this month’s Devon YFC club of the month is still relatively young, having only been formed 10 years ago.

Kenn Valley YFC is going from strength to strength and is not only providing a busy and varied programme for their members, but is also playing a key part in the local community.

The club has recently given a helping hand to Kennford’s nursery ‘Playbox’ to clean up their outside play area.

Club Chairman Imogen Northmore says: “We think it’s so important that young farmers are a big part of the local community and it’s great to be giving something back. A group of us were invited down to Playbox to do some pressure washing and painting to spruce up their outside play area.”

Charity fundraising is also high on Kenn Valley YFC’s agenda, this year raising money for the Dawlish Warren Lifesaving Club and Devon Air Ambulance. Their most recent fundraiser was their Christmas Tractor Run. This was the first time Kenn Valley have organised a tractor run and they were overwhelmed by the response from the communities of Exminster, Chudleigh and Kenn.

To join your local YFC club, take a look at the Devon YFC website – www.devonyfc.co.uk.

Imogen adds: “The tractor run was amazing. It was incredible seeing the streets of the three villages lined with local people watching the tractors drive past. We had 24 tractors that were all decorated to get into the festive spirit. It was a great opportunity for the local community to come together and raise some money for charity too.”

This is definitely a year of firsts for Kenn Valley, as they are also taking part in the Young Farmers drama competition for the first time. Clubs across the county will be competing in this competition which involves each club producing their own 1-hour drama performance.

Imogen adds: “We have just started rehearsing our drama and it is certainly out of our comfort zones! It’s great to see new members getting involved and we’re excited to perform at the county drama finals in February. At the moment we are starting to learn our lines, so it will be lots of hard work putting it all together – but we’re up for the challenge!”
