A south west commercial livestock show saw two thirds more entries this year than last year.

Agrifest South West 2022 saw a 64 per cent increase in numbers this year, its second year under the direction of the Devon County Agricultural Association.

The show is an opportunity for the Devon farming community to showcase its prowess in the commercial livestock sector.

Agrifest chairperson, Deborah Custance-Baker said: "Westpoint Hall was a picture of excellence and created really tough competition with so many extraordinary quality entries and a battle for thousands of pounds worth of prize money.

"We’d like to congratulate all those who won their hotly contested classes.

"Special congratulations go to our overall winners - Supreme Primestock Champion Dizzy owned by the Kirbys and the Champion pair of Beltex lambs, owned by the Priestlys – all truly fantastic specimens and titles thoroughly well-deserved."

Attended by many more visitors than previously, Agrifest offers farmers, agricultural traders, professionals and researchers the opportunity to come together to celebrate farming in the UK.

Visitors were also treated to seminars hosted by pioneers in future farming practice including Andy Gray, 16th generation farmer, Silvopasture expert as well as chair of Council for the Devon County Agricultural Association.

The Steak and Burger competition saw more than 50 entries that judges chomped their way through to declare the overall champion - a gluten-free cheeseburger from Strawberry Fields farm shop in Lifton.

Burger creator and butcher, Arronn Gregory said: "It was a bit of a last minute decision to enter the competition. I always try and experiment with textures and flavours.

"This particular burger is made from Devon Ruby Red beef with the addition of Monterey Jack Cheese which really seems to have tickled the palates of the judges.

"I’ve only been with Strawberry Fields for a few weeks so it’s amazing to have been presented with such an accolade so early on in the proceedings, particularly given the number of entries. As you can imagine, my bosses at Strawberry Fields are absolutely delighted."

Agrifest 2023 will take place on Wednesday, November 8.
